"In Loving Memory of Jesse Helms" was a preemptive funeral procession for the former senator from North Carolina. This piece was my first foray into the world of performance which at the time best suited me as a means of expressing my displeasure with the Christian Right movement. This piece grew out of specific sculptural elements that I had created as opposed to a more theatrically based point of view.
The piece culminated with an African-American opera singer, with whom I have collaborated with in the past, singing Vagner while laying beneath a grand piano wearing insulated headphones used by workers on airport tarmacs. The headphones kept her from hearing the more contemporary music I played on the piano. The fantastic clash and dissonance left the audience cringing and confused with some people even walking out.
