Through my relationship with Teatro Hispano de Dallas, I had the pleasure of working with dance company director Loris Beckles. He was assembling a modern dance and performance art festival in Dallas and I was asked to create a new piece to contribute.
In "Ice Breaker," my masked character entered the stage wearing a sculptural costume piece consisting of a drum major's hat and a suit with audio speakers imbedded in it. I entered the stage and used the speakers in the suit to amply my whispered voice as I uncomfortably probed the audience to begrudgingly participate. "Ice Breaker" was created right before I decided to leave Dallas, which I had found a very difficult place to live and connect with people. This piece was filled with long uncomfortable pauses, forced conversation that mirrored the discomfort I felt in trying to become a part of the city. It was both a farewell to the city, which had both been good to me in terms of opportunities to create, as well as an "eye-for-an-eye" moment that reflected it's general cold nature.
