The concept for Chevalerie is Ceci…(Chivalry is This…) draws its inspiration from the flourishing art and architecture of the Gothic period in mid 12th century France that eventually spread throughout Europe and is evident during the Conquest of the Americas. The social conditions including war and religious fervor that led to the elaborate and grandiose works of the period will be paralleled to today’s society as the exhibit attempts to redefine contemporary notions of Gothic via new visual interpretations.
The artists share a high art aesthetic which both displays social and political awareness that may essentially serve as the conditions before enlightenment. The work explores the Gothic sentiments through this obscure socio-political lens that highlights capitalist notions of individuality and spirituality in a contemporary globalize society.
The exhibit will consist of ten regional artists both established and upcoming that work in a variety of media including the traditional, painting, drawing, sculpture, and venturing into installation, photography, video and performance.
